CAMBRIDGE, Ontario / RankWire.AI / – Emergency traffic diversions were enacted by provincial authorities on Wednesday afternoon after a serious 3-vehicle crash resulted in the closure of all eastbound lanes of Hwy 401 at Hwy 8 in Cambridge. Crews from emergency response teams arrived near Speedsville Road around 2:30 p.m. to assist motorists affected by the incident. The collision caused an immediate halt to traffic flow, leading to significant delays for drivers traveling between Cambridge and Kitchener. Traffic authorities redirected vehicles away from the highway to ensure safe access for medical personnel and cleanup operations at the scene.

Provincial police officers secure the highway scene after a severe multi-vehicle rollover crash.

The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that a large dump truck, which had rolled over, was involved in the multi-vehicle collision. First responders discovered two injured individuals at the scene, both of whom required immediate medical care before being transported to hospital. Police reported that one victim sustained minor injuries, while the other suffered more serious wounds during the crash. The identities of those injured were not immediately disclosed during the initial updates issued by local authorities.

In a social media post on the platform X, OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt explained the immediate challenges faced by recovery teams. Schmidt stated that the overturned dump truck necessitated a substantial cleanup effort before normal traffic could be restored. Authorities strongly advised drivers to avoid the area and to seek alternative routes during the afternoon commute. Law enforcement continued to impose heavy delays as officers diverted oncoming vehicles from the obstructed eastbound lanes.

Dump Truck Rollover Causes Major Traffic Congestion on Highway 401

The disruption extended throughout the surrounding municipal roads, bringing traffic to a complete halt between Cambridge and Kitchener. Highway officials warned drivers to expect long-lasting delays that would affect the King Street East and Shantz Hill areas. The sudden lane closures severely impacted rush hour traffic along the affected sections of the highway. The congestion persisted well into the afternoon, increasing pressure on local police units managing the influx of heavy vehicles.

Cleanup crews arrived to handle the overturned dump truck and the scattered debris. Removing the damaged vehicles and debris required considerable effort, with estimates suggesting several hours to clear the roadway fully. Incident commanders oversaw the complex removal process to ensure all spilled materials were completely cleared from the public roadway. The lengthy cleanup highlighted the significant delays faced on the heavily used 401 corridor during major commercial vehicle incidents.

Collision Near Speedsville Road Interchange Causes Road Closures

Following the 3-vehicle crash that shut down all eastbound lanes of Hwy 401 at Hwy 8 in Cambridge, regional police coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation to manage the scene. After thorough debris removal, all lanes reopened at 7:25 p.m. The successful clearance allowed backed-up traffic to gradually disperse after hours of continuous closure. Police confirmed the route’s reopening after the extensive cleanup efforts in the afternoon.

The investigation into the precise circumstances of the rollover remains ongoing under provincial police jurisdiction. Collision reconstruction specialists analyze vehicle damage and environmental factors to identify the primary cause of the multi-vehicle incident. Law enforcement officials will provide updates as the investigation advances. Safety advocates continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance from commercial transport operators and passenger vehicles navigating the congested provincial expressway network.
